"Life is short and we have too little time to gladden the hearts of those who travel the way with us. Be swift to love. Make haste to be kind.” Henri Frederic Amiel, a 19th century Swiss philosopher

CROP Hunger Walk 2009

Dr. Sondra King, professor in the school of family, consumer and nutrition sciences, to whom the walk is traditionally dedicated, traveled around the world to help with childhood hunger issues. Since her untimely death, the North DeKalb County CROP Hunger Walk has been dedicated in her memory.

This year’s C.R.O.P. Walk was a great success!! Here at St. Paul's we raised $1,230 this year, compared to $609 last year!! Congratulations and a big Thank You to all who walked, collected funds, or made donations! This is close to St. Paul's record $1,331 raised in 2006.

Walkers this year were David and Ellen Anderson, Dick Dowen, Michael, Kristin and Nora Duffy, and Henry and Eva Leonard. Bob Harkness collected funds. David, Ellen and Michael receive pins for raising more than $200 each! There were more than 200 walkers in our northern DeKalb County region, and more than $25,000 was raised in the region, close to a record!

Dave Anderson shared that "I was impressed and sorrowed by the extent of world hunger that exists that we learned about during the presentation before the walk and the walk itself. I was touched by the generosity of the members of St Paul. It feels very good to do a small part in helping others and putting God's Word we study in Church to work."

Additionally, Michael Duffy shared that "The CROP walk was a beautiful display of love and support for those who are less fortunate than us."

St. Paul's Episcopal Church has been involved with crop walk for many years. Henry Leonard is our organizer. Henry Leonard shared that in 2008 "twenty-five percent of the funds raised were divided among Meals on Wheels, the DeKalb Food Pantry, the Sycamore Food Pantry, Hope Haven, and Safe Passage to combat hunger in our area. Church World Service (C.W.S.) and other international agencies for disaster relief and self-help development projects throughout the worldused approximately 75% of the funds."
